At Winfield Family and Occupational Medicine, we believe staying healthy starts with prevention. An annual check-up, sometimes called a yearly physical or wellness visit, is one of the best ways to take care of yourself, even if you’re feeling great.
These visits allow us to get to know you, monitor your health over time, and catch potential problems early—before they become more serious. If you’re unsure what to expect or how to prepare, we’re here to make it easy.
Why Annual Checkups Matter
Annual checkups focus on preventive care, which helps protect your long-term health. During your visit, your provider may:
- Review your medical history and family history
- Screen for conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol
- Monitor chronic conditions such as asthma, arthritis, or heart disease
- Review medications and supplements
- Discuss diet, exercise, sleep, stress, and overall wellness
- Make sure you’re up to date on recommended vaccines and screenings
Even when you feel well, subtle changes can occur over time. Regular visits help us stay ahead of issues and keep you feeling your best.
What to Expect During Your Annual Checkup
While each visit is tailored to you, most annual checkups include:
Health History Review
We’ll talk about:
- Current and past medical conditions
- Family medical history
- Any new symptoms or concerns
- Medications, vitamins, and supplements
- Lifestyle habits such as nutrition, physical activity, tobacco, or alcohol use
Vital Signs and Measurements
These may include:
- Blood pressure
- Heart rate
- Height and weight
- Body mass index (BMI)
Physical Exam
Your provider may examine your heart, lungs, abdomen, skin, ears, nose, throat, and joints. The exam is based on your age, health history, and personal risk factors.
Preventive Screenings
Depending on your age and health needs, screenings may include blood work, cancer screenings, bone density testing, or other recommended preventive services.
Vaccines
We’ll review and update vaccines such as flu, tetanus, shingles, pneumonia, or others based on current guidelines.
Time for Questions
This is your time. Please ask about anything—from fatigue and sleep to stress, weight concerns, or medication questions.
Medicare Annual Wellness Visits
For patients with Medicare, we also offer Medicare Annual Wellness Visits (AWVs). This visit is different from a traditional physical exam and focuses on preventive care, health risk assessment, and long-term planning.
During a Medicare Annual Wellness Visit, we may:
- Review your medical and family history
- Assess fall risk, memory, and overall safety
- Review medications and preventive screenings
- Develop or update a personalized prevention plan
There is no cost to you for this visit when completed annually, as covered by Medicare.
How to Prepare for Your Visit
To help us make the most of your appointment, please bring:
- A list of current medications, including doses (or bring the bottles)
- A list of vitamins or supplements
- Any recent test results or specialist reports (if applicable)
It’s also helpful to:
- Write down questions or concerns ahead of time
- Note any changes in your health since your last visit
- Let us know if you were instructed to fast for lab work
A Note About Annual Visits
Annual checkups focus on prevention and overall health. If you have a new illness, injury, or worsening symptoms, please let us know—those concerns may require a separate appointment so we can give them the attention they deserve.
